Guardiola: Manchester City respected Burton and the Carabao Cup scoring nine goals

Manchester City destroyed League one side Burton Albion at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg clash.

Two goals from Gabriel Jesus and one each from Kevin De Bruyne and Olexandr Zinchenko in the first half had given Manchester City 4-0 lead at halftime. But the Citizens were even more ruthless in the second half adding a further five to complete a 9-0 thrashing of the League one side.

Speaking after the game Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said the respected Burton and the competition by not dropping the tempo in the second half.

“To play simple and to try to score more goals, it’s the best way to respect the competition and respect the opponent.” Guardiola explained.

“If you forget to continue, you don’t have respect for your opponent and you don’t have respect for the competition.

“The best way is to do what you have to do for our future. We have done [that].”

Guardiola men next game is a Premier League clash against Wolves Monday, 14 January. While the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg will be played on January 23 at Burton.
